The Meaning of Baptism

I.    Why should I be baptized?
        -To follow Jesus' example
At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the Jordan
                River.  (Mark 1:9 NIV)
        -Because Jesus commands it.
Jesus said, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have commanded you."  (Matthew 28:19-20 NIV)
-It demonstrates to others that I really am a Christian.
We know that we have come to know Him if we obey His commands. (1 John
                2:3 NIV)

II.    What is the meaning of baptism?
-It is a profession of my faith in Christ.
We were buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as
Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may
live a new life.  (Romans 6:4 NIV)

-It is an expression of my submission to Christ.
But John kept objecting and said, "I ought to be baptized by you.  Why have you
come to me?"  Jesus answered, "For now this is how it should be, because we
must do all that God wants us to do."  Then John agreed.  (Matthew 3:14-15

III.   Why be baptized by immersion?
-The word "baptize" means to dip or submerge in water.

-Because Jesus was baptized by immersion.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, He came up out of the water. (Matthew 3:16

-Every baptism in the New Testament was by immersion.
Than both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized
him.  Then they came up out of the water.  (Acts 8:30-39 NIV)

-Immersion best symbolizes Jesus' death, burial and resurrection.
